Beer of the Week: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

Image
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a remarkable beer: its focus on American hops has established it as the country’s signature pale ale. “When we first brewed our pale ale in 1980, we knew it was a departure from what was available, but as serious home brewers, it was what we and our friends loved to drink,” said Ken Grossman, founder and owner of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. His brand is now worth an estimated $1 billion. “We honestly had no idea it would have such staying power or such an impact.  We’ve continued to brew to our originalrecipe—using lots of whole-cone Cascade hops and 100 percent two-row malt—and still embrace natural bottle conditioning. We started out with a strong vision for what we wanted pale ale to be, flavor-wise, and stuck to the highest standards without ever compromising on bitterness or hop flavor. I think that even after 35 years, our clear focus still shines through in the beer.” It’s been more than 35 years since Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was created, an...

Central Massachusetts Breweries (video in description)

Image
Craft Breweries have really began to bloom since the year 2011. In 2011 there was an estimated 1,776 breweries in the United States, and today there is almost 4,000 and counting. Considering this trend, more local craft breweries have been started within central Massachusetts. It is with good reason because according to Kevin Koczwara, craft beer makes up 11% of the total market, 41% of Americans who drink alcohol perfer beer, the 21.7 million barrels sold in 2014, and that breweries can only produce up to 6 million barrels a years to qualify as a "craft brewery" have all amplified the reasons for more of these local breweries to open their doors. In Massachusetts, some of the biggest brewing companies are located such as Harpoon Brewery and the Samuel Adams Brewing Company. However, there are also some other great breweries in the region that may not be as well known. Here is a list of 10 local craft breweries in central Massachusetts (hours subject to change).
