Bagby Beer Company

Image
Bagby Beer Company was a one of many wonderful breweries I stumbled upon in the San Diego Area. But, you can definitely say Bagby Beer Company has "the works" when it comes to a brewery and dining facility. I enjoyed my Asphalt Jungle Irish-Style Stout, served with nitrogen, while seated at the front bar. After exploring a little I realized this facility had endless capabilities. Serving brunch, lunch, and dinner, Bagby's had a front and back bar, an outside patio area, and as well as a dining room. This location is perfect for a large party or a solo adventure with a beer and a book. Great beer, great food, and a great venue. If you find yourself in the San Diego, Bagby Beer Company is a MUST visit. If not, check out their virtual tour on their website. Beer of the Week: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

Image
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a remarkable beer: its focus on American hops has established it as the country’s signature pale ale. “When we first brewed our pale ale in 1980, we knew it was a departure from what was available, but as serious home brewers, it was what we and our friends loved to drink,” said Ken Grossman, founder and owner of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. His brand is now worth an estimated $1 billion. “We honestly had no idea it would have such staying power or such an impact.  We’ve continued to brew to our originalrecipe—using lots of whole-cone Cascade hops and 100 percent two-row malt—and still embrace natural bottle conditioning. We started out with a strong vision for what we wanted pale ale to be, flavor-wise, and stuck to the highest standards without ever compromising on bitterness or hop flavor. I think that even after 35 years, our clear focus still shines through in the beer.” It’s been more than 35 years since Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was created, an...

Central Massachusetts Breweries (video in description)

Image
Craft Breweries have really began to bloom since the year 2011. In 2011 there was an estimated 1,776 breweries in the United States, and today there is almost 4,000 and counting. Considering this trend, more local craft breweries have been started within central Massachusetts. It is with good reason because according to Kevin Koczwara, craft beer makes up 11% of the total market, 41% of Americans who drink alcohol perfer beer, the 21.7 million barrels sold in 2014, and that breweries can only produce up to 6 million barrels a years to qualify as a "craft brewery" have all amplified the reasons for more of these local breweries to open their doors. In Massachusetts, some of the biggest brewing companies are located such as Harpoon Brewery and the Samuel Adams Brewing Company. However, there are also some other great breweries in the region that may not be as well known. Here is a list of 10 local craft breweries in central Massachusetts (hours subject to change). Beer of the Week- Goose Green Line Pale Ale by Goose Island Brewery

Image
Looks and pours a very nice copper/orange color, great clarity, with a one finger soft white head. Smell is faint, slight citrus scent, not much hop aroma. Taste is sweet malt up front, almost no hop presence at first. A few sips later the sweetness fades and the hops start to show through. Minimal hop bite (this might be due to the fact that I have been drinking many hop HEAVY beers for the last few weeks), nothing compared to an IPA or even the top APA's.  Mouthfeel initially is chewy with that sweet malt up front, but as you drink it the beer becomes thinner and thinner. Minimal carbonation on tongue. Drink-ability  is very high, could drink this all night. Not filling at all and with the 5% abv, it is very easy to knock these back. Overall a great Chicago based brewery and beer. You can find this beer at various Boston sports venues like TD Garden and Fenway.

Diversity in the World of Craft Beer (video in description)

Image
The craft beer community has become extremely popular and seems to grow every year. In the U.S. craft beer market, a $101.7 billion industry, not only has the number of breweries grown in recent years but so has the consumer demographic. Previously dominated by the white consumer, the industry has seen increasing strides including the acquisition of a more racially diverse crowd. One man who has seen this trend and perhaps explains it better than anyone else is Kevin Blodger, Co-owner of Baltimore's Union Craft Brewing and member of the Brewers Association diversity committee. He explains how the African American and other minority communities, though not intentionally, have been excluded from marketing efforts and thus never really were able to become a key demographic. He sees the reason is because of the lack of adversting budgets and how the industry is more word-of-mouth, thus if originally more caucasians consumed craft beer it is more likely that through word-of-mouth more c...
